      Newcastle vs Augsburg Predictions

Newcastle will host Augsburg looking to garner some morale ahead of their Premier League opener against Tottenham. The Magpies have had a shadow looming over the entire club recently with the uncertainty as to whether or not the club will be sold and who the manager might be in a few months’ time. Rafa Benitez has done well to keep his team focused though as they have been consistent in pre-season so far.

One win, two draws and one loss is extremely average form but without that competitive edge, it is fine to sometimes aim to just get people moving. The draws against Hull and Porto were reassuring, showing that they are reaching the quality of teams similar them and with these coming after their 2-0 dismissal of St. Pat’s, it shows that they can hold on to a result and be possess real steel at times, something they are going to desperately need going into this second consecutive season of Premier League football.

With the finances at the club being under question, it is not surprising that Newcastle have only spent £13m so far in the transfer market. Despite that, the people they have brought in are very good quality for their level. After Martin Dubravka’s heroics in the second half of last year won them many crucial points, they needed to sign him permanently from Sparta Praha, so Benitez will be extremely happy with this business for a measly £3.6m. The acquisitions of Fabian Schär and Sung-yong Ki are also very encouraging, and the latter will hopefully fill the void left by Mikel Merino’s departure. These cheap buys coupled with their almost £40m worth of transfer income have been extremely streetwise decisions by the management team and will stand them in good stead going into the new season.

Like Newcastle, Augsburg have also had a pretty satisfactory pre-season with three wins, a loss and a draw. The Bundesliga side will benefit heavily from their victories over Middlesbrough and SC Olching. It gave their attackers the opportunity to get off the mark for the season and a run out is always more positive when a victory comes with it as well. Their only loss of pre-season so far came against Borussia Mönchengladbach but with the opposition being much stronger, to get a goal against them was achievement enough and once again, fitness was the goal in this match.

Augsburg will be looking to progress from their recent 12th and 13th place finishes in the Bundesliga but their transfers haven’t exactly been the most encouraging. Andre Hahn has joined after jumping ship from the relegated Hamburg, but the winger hasn’t been outstanding in recent years. Julian Schieber has also signed but was terrible last season for Hertha BSC and won’t really excite fans of the club. If they don’t bring in some real tested quality before the start of the season, the club could suffer and have a pretty poor campaign.

Despite their poor transfer market dealings, Augsburg have been in slightly better form than Newcastle and could nip this one, but we are going to back a draw in this one. Neither side has been blowing teams away and with Newcastle already drawing twice in their four pre-season games, this one could follow that trend. These are two rather evenly matched sides and we’re going to back a low scoring draw.
