Newcastle vs PSG Predictions
- Under 2.5 goals has landed in four of Newcastle’s last five matches.
- The Magpies have kept five successive clean sheets in all competitions.
- PSG have kept a clean sheet in each of their last three games.
Magpies tighten up after shaky start
St James’ Park plays host to a Champions League tie for the first time in over two decades on Wednesday but goals could be in short supply on Tyneside.
After a difficult start to the campaign in which they lost three of their opening four matches, Newcastle have tightened up at the back to win four of their last five in all competitions and even a Kylian Mbappe-led front line may not be strong enough to breach a defensive unit that have kept five successive clean sheets.
Mbappe set for comeback at St James’ Park
The wantaway star of PSG was absent for their goalless draw at Clermont on Saturday after picking up an ankle injury in the first half against Marseille but should return to the fray on Wednesday.
Luis Enrique confirmed the 24-year-old, who has scored half of PSG’s competitive goals this season, was back in training and ready to play but he may not last the full 90 minutes, which would boost Newcastle’s chances significantly.
Goal drought expected on Tyneside
Both sides have looked extremely solid at the back lately, with the Magpies racking up five successive clean sheets and PSG keeping the opposition at bay in their last three matches.
Under 2.5 goals has landed in four of the hosts’ last five outings, so I’m backing that at generous odds along with a repeat of Newcastle’s Champions League opener – a goalless draw at AC Milan.
