Tip Reasoning

It has been an excellent start to the season for Newport County and, despite pre-season expectations which perhaps saw them challenging for a spot in the play-offs, the Welshman have kicked on and now have their sights set on going up automatically. This Tuesday evening they have the opportunity to take a step closer to achieving that aim as they welcome a Northampton Town side who have been disappointing so far to Rodney Parade.

Newport County’s early season form has been one of the surprises of the season so far but with just one win in their last six league matches, there is still work to do if they are to return to the sort of form which has put them in this position in the first place. Saturday’s 2-1 defeat away to Cheltenham Town will have been a bitter pill for them to swallow but County did return to form thanks to wins in the Checkatrade Trophy, FA Cup and a win against Colchester in the league prior to that so they should still have plenty of confidence in their ability to earn all three points.

Making the trip to Rodney Parade is a Northampton Town side who have plenty left to to prove, despite an upturn in form since the appointment of Keith Curle. The Cobblers have failed to win their previous three matches in the league and even though it was a tough run of fixtures, they will still be disappointed to find themselves down in 15th position. Despite their failure to secure the three points of late, they will take comfort in the fact that they have maintained a record of scoring two or more goals in each of their last seven outings in all competitions.

Newport will go into this fixture as favourites given the relative league positions of the two sides, but we think that Northampton are not to be underestimated. Given their goal-scoring exploits of late, we think that they will prove to be a danger once again and we think that backing both teams to score represents the safest option for a decent return.
