Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Both teams arrive into this clash in solid recent form and they are fancied to play out a cagey affair between two relatively closely matched sides, four of Northern Ireland’s last five games have gone under 2.5 goals and that is the pick.

Draw 1-1

Reason for tip

This should be an even affair and Luxembourg can hold their own against a Northern Ireland team dealing with the loss of their captain, two of the visitors’ last three Nations League games have been draws and 1-1 looks a tempting price.

Northern Ireland vs Luxembourg Predictions

  • Four of Northern Ireland’s last five games have gone under 2.5 goals
  • Luxembourg have drawn two of their last three Nations League clashes
  • Northern Ireland are unbeaten in four of their last five outings

Goals in short supply at Windsor Park

Northern Ireland were dealt a hammer blow recently as captain and defensive stalwart Jonny Evans announced his retirement from international football.

The Green and White Army begin the post-Evans era with a Nations League clash against Luxembourg on Thursday, who have been in decent form recently.

The minnows finished third of six in their qualifying group for Euro 2024, just five points behind Slovakia in second place and ahead of both Iceland and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

They were knocked out of the play-offs, which they reached thanks to their Nations League performances, 2-0 by Georgia.

The Red Lions are now just two spots behind their highest ever position in the FIFA rankings and are a much more dangerous proposition than they have been in the past.

Northern Ireland have been in decent form themselves however, beating Denmark last year and getting the better of Scotland in a friendly in March.

Michael O’Neil’s men also drew with Romania just before that and have only lost one of their last five matches as a result.

Promotion from this Nations League group will be the ultimate aim as they line up alongside these opponents, Bulgaria and Belarus.

Northern Ireland may not have this game as easy as they would like and it’s hard to get involved at odds-on for a team that lost seven of their ten Euro 2024 qualifiers.

It may pay to side with the unders in this clash in what could be a cagey affair at Windsor Park as these two teams battle it out.

Correct score backers should note that two of Luxembourg’s last three Nations League games have been draws, take a 1-1 draw.
