Norway Women vs Nigeria Women Predictions

Unlike their male equivalents, the Norwegian women’s team has long been one of the best in the game; they won the World Cup back in 1995, reached the semi-finals in 1999 and then again in 2007, while they won the EURO’s in 1993 and reached the final in both 2005 and 2013. However, they’ve disappointed in the last two renewals of this tournament.

When they surprisingly lost by a goal to nil against New Zealand in April, it looked as though Norway could be moving in the wrong direction ahead of the biggest tournament in the game, but they bounce back in timely fashion just a few days ago, beating South Africa by seven goals to two. Having filled their boots on that occasion, the Norwegians ought to go to Reims in buoyant mood.

In general, Norway have looked solid over the last few months. Prior to that defeat against New Zealand, Gresshoppene went on three-game unbeaten run, getting the better of Poland, China and Denmark, scoring eight goals and conceding just two in the process. In truth, a repeat of any of those efforts should be more than enough to secure victory here.

Unlike the Norwegians, Nigeria have struggled to get going in previous World Cups, making it out of the groups just once (1999). Having failed to pick up a win in Canada four years ago, the Super Falcons will be hoping to create a positive impression this time around.

They may be hopeful of doing better,  but the Nigerians look set for a tough opening day. They did lose by only a single goal against a decent Canadian side last time out, though they really should’ve conceded more than the two goals they did, as they looked easy to break down. What’s more, Thomas Dennerby’s women have generally struggled against sides of Norway’s calibre; they lost by three goals to nil against China back in January, while they conceded four in defeat against Austria in February.

Additionally, Nigeria lost 1-0 against South Africa in the African Cup of Nations back in November, which doesn’t exactly bode well considering that Norway recently scored seven against the same opposition.

From a betting point of view, given their recent scoring exploits, the bet that stands out is ‘Norway to Score Over 2.5 Goals’. The Norwegians, who’ve scored at least three goals in their last four games, proved that they’ve got more than enough quality to hurt defensively inept opponents when notching seven against South Africa just a few days ago and they’re backed to be similarly ruthless in front of goal against Nigeria.
