- Southend needed additional time in both of their previous play-off games.
- The Latics have gone three games without conceding.
Latics and Shrimpers battle for EFL return
The final remaining place in League Two will be claimed on Sunday as Oldham Athletic and Southend United meet in the National League play-off final at Wembley.
Oldham are looking to end a two-year absence from the Football League, while Southend have spent the last three seasons in the fifth tier of English football.
Both teams will be well supported at Wembley and the capacity has been raised to 50,000 for this game after an appeal from both sets of fans.
Southend claimed four points from their two games against Oldham during the regular season but the Latics have raised their levels in the play-offs.
The north west outfit brushed Halifax aside 4-0 in their first play-off game and followed that up with a 3-0 win at York. The win over the Minstermen was particularly impressive, as York finished the season in second place with 96 points, 53 of which came from their 23 home games.
In contrast, Southend had to fight back from 3-1 down to beat Rochdale in extra time and they were taken the full distance by Forest Green as they prevailed after penalties.
As such, backing Oldham to win in 90 minutes appeals for our main bet and a 2-0 win for the Latics is the correct score prediction. Oldham have gone three games without conceding and when Southend do occasionally struggle in attack – they’ve failed to score in two of their last six games and have failed to score in each of their last nine National League defeats.
Oldham’s Joe Pritchard has spent three seasons in League One with Accrington and made a couple of Championship appearances for Bolton earlier in his career. Pritchard started the season in League Two with MK Dons and he looks eager to get back into the EFL as he scored against both Halifax and York, and he looks a good contender for an anytime effort on Sunday.
