Reason For Oxford United vs Sunderland Predictions

  • Sunderland are in the fifth-lowest scorers away from home in League this season.
  • Only two teams, both of whom are in the top six, have conceded less home goals than Oxford in League 1 this season.
  • Oxford are League 1’s third-best side in terms of shots on target conceded at home.
  • Sunderland are in the top six when it comes to shots on target conceded away from home this term.

U’s on the slide

League leaders around the turn of the year, Oxford have gone from looking like they might stretch out in front to looking like a place in the play-offs might be beyond them. Thanks to a run of games that has yielded just one win, the U’s have dropped to 10th in the table. Fortunately, due to the tight nature of top half, they’re only five points shy of the coveted top six, though they need to get back to picking up regular points if they’re to avoid being caught too far behind.

On a more positive note, Oxford remain a tough side to beat at home, where they’ve lost just two of 13 this season. Not only have the U’s generally avoided defeat at home, but they’ve also done an excellent job of restricting teams. Only two teams have conceded fewer home goals than Oxford, who’ve shipped just 11 times at Kassam Stadium. That’s an average of just 0.85 against. They’ve also kept a pleasing nine clean sheets, four of which have come against teams that currently reside in the top eight.

Black Cats purring

While Oxford have slipped from their once lofty perch, Sunderland have made significant headway of late. It wasn’t that long ago that a top-six finish looked unlikely for a side that was struggling massively to wins on a regular basis, but under the careful stewardship of Phil Parkinson, who has now had time to get it right, the Black Cats have turned into a side that looks more than capable of repeating their top-six antics from a season ago.

Sunderland are currently one of the most in-form teams in the division having won four, drawn one and lost just one of their last six, while they come into this match off the back of two encouraging home wins. However, on their travels, Parkinson’s men still look slightly underwhelming, especially in the final third.

If anything was to stop them getting in the top six from here, then it would likely be their lack of goals on the road. Sunderland have scored just 12 goals in 14 travelling matches this term, scoring more than once in just three of those 14. They’ve also failed to score on six occasions away from home.

Hosts to edge it

Right now, Sunderland are the team in form, though their overall efforts away from home this term are hard to ignore. While Oxford are no mugs at Kassam. Keeping this in mind, the U’s appear to be too big in the early betting. Punters are urged to take advantage and side with a home win. While Sunderland have scored an average of just 0.86, conceding an average of 1.14, on the road, Oxford have given little away at home, while they’ve been no slouches at the other end. Sunderland’s average goal difference on the road is -0.28. Oxford’s is +0.92. The hosts also boast a shots-on-target supremacy of +2.30. In contrast, Sunderland’s is -0.64. Add in that the hosts, who’re no strangers to beating the better sides at home, have kept clean sheets for fun at home, combine it with the fact that Sunderland have often struggled offensively on the road and it becomes tough to go against a home win.
