Under 2.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Pacos Ferreira could not turn their share of possession and territory into any goals last Monday while Portimonense, who failed to score in four of their last five away games last term, were blanked on opening weekend. Five of the last six meetings between the clubs have featured fewer than three goals.

Reason for tip

Pacos Ferreira scored in nine of their last 11 home league contests last season and averaged just over a goal a game. Meanwhile, Portimonense conceded just over a goal a game away from home in 2021-22 and scored 16 times in their 17 away trips. Two of the last four meetings between them finished one apiece.

Another moribund Monday in Portugal

The Monday night Primeira Liga game has become a bit of a standing joke – with entertainment usually thin on the ground – and neither Pacos Ferreira or Portimonense look likely to turn this week’s into a thriller. The Beavers were unlucky to taste defeat to Gil Vicente last Monday with César Peixoto’s side matching the Europa League hopefuls throughout the 90 minutes only to fall to a very late winner.

They’ll be happier back on home turf – where they finished last season on a good run of results. The only home defeats Pacos Ferreira suffered in their last nine games were against Porto and Benfica, winning four and drawing three of the other seven post-Christmas fixtures.

Portimonense, who lost four of their last five away league games in 2021-22, spurned a great chance to equalise in the 90th minute of their season-opening defeat at home to Boavista. Prior to that, though, they had been held at bay and largely restricted to long-range shooting opportunities by a depleted visiting side.

The Algarveans fared much better on the road last season – collecting 22 points – than they did at home, so this is quite difficult to call as far as the match result goes. Where it isn’t hard to predict is in the goal expectation as it would be a major surprise if more than two efforts hit the back of the net.

Five of the last six meetings between the clubs have featured fewer than three goals with Pacos unbeaten during that span. Four have been drawn, which points us to a correct score play of 1-1 here.
