Palmeiras vs River Plate (Montevideo) Predictions

Palmeiras will be looking to win their remaining game and score more than 3 goals in order to give themselves a chance of progressing; they will be hoping that 2nd place Rosario Central slip up against group leaders Nacional as even a draw in that game spells disaster for Palmeiras.  Their first game of the group stages saw them post a frustrating 2-2 draw against strugglers River Plate where they will be disappointed in the fact that they conceded the lead twice in the game. Their next match was much more positive as they recorded a 2-0 win at home over Rosario Central though they rode their luck as Rosario forward Marco Ruben missed a penalty and dominated the game in terms of shots and possession. Following this win they hosted group leaders Nacional where they conceded 2 goals in 2 first half minutes, before Nacional’s defender Jorge Fucile was sent off in the 41st minute and Palmeiras pulled a goal back just before half time.

They were unable to further their goal tally though, despite Nacional having a 2nd player sent off in the 90th minute, that game finishing 1-2. The away game against Nacional also ended in disappointment for Palmeiras, where the tie was eventually settled by a single goal coming in the 50th minute, 1-0, they fared better in the next game away to Rosario Central, managing to draw the game 3-3, despite their goalscorer Gabriel managing to pick a straight red card after netting a brace.

River Plate sit bottom of their group where even their first win of their tournament would not give them any chance of qualifying, they will be hoping to spoil any potential party in São Paulo however, as conceding fewer than 3 goals will ruin their host’s chances of qualifying.  They began the group stages with a hard fought 2-2 draw against Palmeiras before managing to hold out away from home at Nacional to record a solid 0-0 draw. Their good form ended however, when they faced Rosario, losing the away fixture 4-1 and the home fixture 1-3, despite taking an early lead through Michael Santos. Finally they held out ot home against Nacional to win another point, that game ending 2-2.

Both teams have been in goal scoring form of late, and as the heat of the competition is turned up, both teams will be going all out to ensure that they are still inline for qualification. Whilst Rivers Copa form might not be great, they are still finding the net.
