Pilgrims can recover from rocky start

Wayne Rooney got off to a rocky start as Plymouth manager on Sunday as he saw his side thrashed 4-0 at Sheffield Wednesday, but the relegation candidates could at least find cup success when they face Cheltenham on Wednesday.

The Robins won their fourth-tier opener against Newport, but they required a 90th-minute goal to do so and come into this season off the back of a season which saw them relegated from League One.

They lost six of their final eight games last term and Plymouth managed to take seven points from their final three assignments at Home Park.

The Pilgrims beat Leyton Orient at this stage last season and Cheltenham have been eliminated at the first time of asking in each of the last three campaigns, so a win for the hosts looks a good bet.

Three of Cheltenham’s last four competitive away defeats have seen them concede exactly two goals and two have been via a 2-1 scoreline, so that’s a decent correct score punt.
