Portland Timbers vs Minnesota United Predictions
- The Timbers have won 65% of their home games this season.
- Minnesota do not travel well and have won just three of their 17 away games this campaign.
- The visitors haven’t kept a clean sheet in any of their previous five games.
Irresistible Portland in fine form
It’s been three years since Portland Timbers hosted a playoff game in front of their own fans at Providence Park. But here they take to the field and welcome Minnesota United in a winner takes all matchup. Giovanni Savarese’s side has been irresistible since August 21st, winning seven of their eight games and did so whilst managing a serious injury list. They deserve a lot of credit and they’ve been fantastic when playing on home soil, coming out victorious in 65% of the games they have played there. The Timbers are full of goals and attacking talent, as is evident by the fact that 50 of their goals have been scored by 12 different players. Boasting a squad full of creativity and finesse, they will feel they have the tools to down this Minnesota outfit at home.
The visitors got off to the start of the season in disastrous fashion, losing their opening four fixtures of the regular season. Manager Adrian Heath made a few personnel changes, including swapping out his goalkeepers and that seemed to inspire an upturn in form. Once goalkeeper Miller was brought in to replace Dayne St. Clair, he kept 11 clean sheets and ensured his side had a solid foundation to build from. They are a battling side, but they do not possess the creativity that Portland have. Holding midfielders Will Trapp and Osvaldo Alonso are great at winning the ball back and pressing, but neither have the nous or the vision to break the defensive lines with precise passes.
Hosts to emerge victorious
We think that Portland Timbers are the superior side. They have creativity, goals and a splendid home record. We think Portland Timbers get the job done here in a 2-1 win.
