Tip Reasoning

  • Morecambe’s 42 goals conceded in 20 games is the worst such record in League One.
  • The Shrimps have conceded nine without reply in their last two league games.
  • Portsmouth are unbeaten in eight league games.

Morecambe rearguard in dreadful shape

Stephen Robinson’s Morecambe have suffered back-to-back hammerings, losing 4-0 to MK Dons and 5-0 at Sunderland in their last two outings. The Shrimps have averaged over two goals conceded per game in League One, boasting the division’s worst defensive record, and will face an uphill battle when they travel to Fratton Park to face Portsmouth, who are unbeaten in eight league games.

Portsmouth’s unbeaten run has featured five clean sheets, although they’ll have been disappointed with their goalless draw against 10-man Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, after dominating much of the game against their fellow playoff contenders. Pompey’s return of 26 goals scored in 21 league games is not amongst the most fearsome records in the third tier, but Morecambe’s poor form should ensure a relatively comfortable afternoon for the hosts.

Handicap provides outstanding value?

While Pompey’s strong defensive record makes backing a home clean sheet tempting, Morecambe do boast the division’s top scorer in Cole Stockton, who already has 13 League One strikes to his name, and will be absolutely vital to their safety hopes.

The most outstanding value, then, can be found on the handicap market; Morecambe’s last five losses have all been by more than a one goal margin, and the price around an in-form Portsmouth team to beat the -1 handicap at home seems generous.

A 2-0 home victory seems a strong correct score prediction, as Portsmouth look to extend their unbeaten run.
