Preston vs Coventry Predictions

  • Preston have drawn their last three Championship home games.
  • Coventry City have drawn two of their last three Championship away games.
  • PNE have lost only two of 11 Championship home games since Frankie McAvoy took charge.

Even-looking contest may provide no winner

Preston and Coventry were given similar odds for promotion and relegation from the Championship this year, so there’s no doubt which team is outperforming expectations with the Sky Blues currently eleven points up on North End and in fourth.

But the oddsmakers are right to rate Wednesday’s game at Deepdale as a roughly even contest and we think the draw looks like a big runner when estimating what the final outcome will be.

PNE have drawn their last three Championship games as Frankie McAvoy’s side appear to have hit a bump in the road. Their one loss on home turf came on the opening day of the season to Hull City, since when they are unbeaten in five, but the goals have dried up.

Last Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Derby County was a dismal display with only the Rams’ lack of cutting edge saving them from defeat. The Lilywhites could get Sean Maguire back from injury in time for Coventry’s visit, but it may need a collective upturn in form to ensure a win.

Unpredictable Sky Blues tend to struggle on road

Mark Robins’ visitors have been so unpredictable of late it’s hard to know what to expect here. Brilliant at home to Peterborough in late September, they were lacerated at Luton a few days later – before then striking back with as 4-1 home win over fancied Fulham.

Their away form is trending downwards, however, so we aren’t keen on taking their odds for what would only be a fourth away win of 2021. A team that has leaked ten goals in their last four away trips might struggle to get even a point on the road, but Preston’s recent goal drought suggests the Sky Blues may escape from Lancashire unpunished and with a point.

Our correct score prediction of 1-1 is based on Preston having scored no more than one in five of their six Championship home games this season and Coventry’s average away-goal output of 0.67.
