Rangers vs Sparta Prague Predictions

  • Rangers have won six of their last nine Europa League home contests.
  • Sparta Prague have lost eight of their last ten Europa League away games.
  • Sparta Prague have conceded nine times in their last three matches without injured defender Ondrej Celustka.

Gers have motivation to punish sloppy Sparta

Rangers need to recover quickly from the double blow of losing manager Steven Gerrard and being dumped out of the Scottish League Cup when they take on Sparta Prague on Thursday.

This Europa League meeting has extra spice to it anyway after the events of the first clash between these clubs in the Czech capital last September.

Glen Kamara received his marching orders and Gers’ 1-0 defeat looked like it could spell curtains for their European campaign, but the Scottish champions have given themselves a chance with four points from their next two Group A fixtures.

As well as getting new boss Gio van Bronckhorst off to a good start, a win here would enhance their prospects of being in the draw for the last-32.  And they should take great heart from the form of their opponents as Sparta head to Glasgow.

Defensive decline can be traced back to Celustka injury

The Maroons’ domestic title hopes suffered a blow courtesy of a 4-0 defeat to Slovacko on Saturday and while the visitors were thoroughly outplayed all over the park, the biggest concern for them is in central defence.

Sparta have shipped nine goals in just under three matches since Ondrej Celustka limped off from their 3-0 defeat in Lyon with a knee injury. He won’t be back for this and his deputy Lukas Stetina was awful against Slovacko, although they could select Andreas Vindheim instead.

Rangers have the motivation and firepower to get the win on Thursday, which tempts us to take the odds-on price about a home victory. Rangers are averaging almost two goals per home game in Europe since October 2020 and our favourite correct score play for this is a 2-0 win for the Light Blues.
