Rayo Vallecano vs Deportivo La Coruna Predictions

Having narrowly avoided relegation last year Deportivo are inevitably seen as one of the favourites for the drop this, although they’ll feel they are on the road towards establishing themselves as a regular top flight club again after a few years where they have been the very definition of a yo-yo club.

Meanwhile it’s not a completely dissimilar story for their opponents despite a very comfortable 11th place finish last season. Rayo are one of the smallest clubs in the league and are always linked with the drop at the beginning of each campaign.

This may be their 5th consecutive one at this level, their longest ever spell in the top tier but survival is still the primary aim, especially after a start which has seen them pick up 1 point from the opening two games without scoring. They did well to hold Valencia to a 0-0 draw on the opening day but were well beaten 3-0 in Vigo last time out although having Toño sent off in the 9th minute certainly didn’t help matters.

Even so it is Deportivo, who have been more impressive so far and they seem to have kicked on from their great escape at the end of last year. Admittedly they only have 2 points to show for it but they put in an excellent performance at the Mestalla last weekend to hold big-spending Valencia to a 1-1 draw after a draw with Real Sociedad on the opening day.

The visitors have all of a sudden become tough to beat under the guidance of former club stalwart Víctor Sánchez and gone are the days when Deportivo would frequently contribute to their own downfall. They are unbeaten in 6 La Liga matches now and are good value to extend that run by getting a point or better here at 3/4.

It is unlikely to be more than a point here though. 5 of those 6 games have ended in draws and away from home, Deportivo would certainly regard it as a point gained rather than 2 squandered. They took 4 points off Rayo Vallecano last season despite finishing well below them and that included a 2-1 win in Vallecas earlier in the year. That was though during a period around Christmas when Rayo were truly awful at home, even losing to whipping boys Cordoba.

You’d expect them to be tighter here and although they are yet to score this season, there are usually goals in matches involving Rayo so backing this one to finish 1-1 looks like a smart move at 11/2.
