Rayo Vallecano vs Sporting Gijon Predictions
Newly promoted Sporting had made a solid start to the new season with two excellent points against Real Madrid and Real Sociedad but hadn’t really been looking too threatening in an attacking sense. All that changed in the space of 8 minutes on Sunday as they raced into a 2-0 lead at Deportivo thanks to an early Arnaldo Sanabria double. The hosts fought back but Sporting scored again in the first half to seal a 3-2 victory and move into the top half.
Rayo were also winners on the road as they claimed a 1-0 win at Las Palmas thanks to a Javi Guerra strike. That should have helped to relieve a little bit of pressure that was starting to build on the Madrid club after a return of just one point and one goal from their opening 3 games.
With the confidence that that opening win of the season brings we may see the shackles come off from both sides here. Certainly Sporting are likely to approach the game in a similar manner to how they went about their weekend win in Galicia. The hosts meanwhile are also a a naturally attacking side and had the best goalscoring record in the bottom half last season but also the joint worst defense in the league.
Therefore we should hopefully see an open game here with both clubs high on confidence and going for another win. At 9/10 there is value in backing there to be over 2.5 goals in the game.
In terms of the result it is a little harder to call. Sporting Gijon have been the most impressive of the promoted clubs so far and a return of 5 points from 4 games is really impressive given the games they’ve had. They can be very tough to break down when they want to be but also clearly possess just enough flare to hurt teams and they could expose Rayo Vallecano’s defensive weaknesses here.
The hosts are an unpredictable outfit and often perform better on the road than at home. They only drew 4 times in all of last season and tend to go for the win in every game but that could back fire here against a well-drilled Sporting outfit. Rayo lost at home to two of the eventual bottom 3 last year in the shape of shock losses to Cordoba and Eibar, while they were also beaten in Vallecas by the subsequently relegated Elche.
With Sporting’s La Liga honeymoon still very much in full swing they could come here and seal a 2-1 win at tempting odds of 11/1.
