Tip Reasoning

  • Reading have avoided defeat in five of their last seven home Championship contests.
  • Sheffield United have failed to win their last four away Championship matches.

Blades blunted by reversion to old system

In terms of recent form and league position, Sheffield United’s price as favourites for Tuesday’s trip to Reading is baffling.

The oddsmakers are probably taking their lead from the underlying stats that state the Blades are in a false position down in 17th place – only three points better off than the Royals.

But Slavisa Jokanovic gave himself another problem on Saturday when he appeared to bow to fan pressure and reverted to a 3-5-2 shape for the visit of Coventry. Since moving to 4-2-3-1, the Blades have created far more chances and have one of the highest xGs in the division, and it was noticeable that they couldn’t create any sustained pressure against the Sky Blues until the final 20 minutes.

Royals have taken step in the right direction

His decision to play an extra striker also didn’t help record signing Rhian Brewster, who was dropped to the bench and remained there throughout 90 goalless minutes. It all appears a bit muddled at the moment and hence we feel naturally predisposed to avoid backing the visitors at around Evens.

The Royals claimed a 1-1 home draw from their last match against Nottingham Forest, which was at least a step in the right direction after back-to-back home defeats. Veljko Paunovic’s side have avoided defeat in five of their last seven home Championship contests and we feel can do the same again.

We’re backing a 1-1 draw in the correct score market in this one because the Blades have scored more than once in only two of their nine away trips this term and their starting strikers on Saturday looked woefully short ion confidence.
