Mills look to end Sunderland hoodoo

Rotherham haven’t beaten Sunderland since way back in 1962 but the Millers may finally end the Black Cats’ hold over them at the New York Stadium on Saturday.

The two teams have only met 15 times since Rotherham’s last success, with Sunderland winning 10 of those meetings, but the South Yorkshire side appear to have hit their stride in recent weeks and they look good value for all three points this weekend.

Rotherham are unbeaten in their last eight games in League One and have five wins in their last seven. Paul Warne’s promotion chasers have also been solid at the back with five clean sheets in that eight-game unbeaten run, and that coupled with home advantage may prove the difference on Saturday.

Sunderland sit one place and one point above their hosts in fourth spot in the League One table but they were beaten 1-0 at home by Charlton in their last league outing. The Wearsiders have also played a game in midweek, seeing off QPR on penalties to reach the EFL Cup quarter finals, while a much-changed Millers side beat Man City U21s 5-0 in the EFL Trophy.

Sunderland have won their last two league games on their travels but those success came at struggling Gillingham and rock bottom Crewe. Rotherham are a level above those sides, and the north east outfit have lost at both Burton and Portsmouth this season so they aren’t necessarily firing on their travels.

Rotherham have won four of their eight home games this term (D2, L2) and three of those victories have been accompanied by clean sheets. Sunderland have drawn blanks in both of their away losses, so a 2-0 home win has a chance in the correct score market.
