Sampdoria vs Sassuolo Predictions

Sassuolo had a fantastic season last term, but could they be about to follow that up with relegation? Things aren’t looking great for them, after they slumped to 16th place in the table. They are just six points above the bottom three, despite finishing sixth just six months ago. Could they be about to drop into Serie B? That would be an awful end to their remarkable rise.

If they’re to avoid dropping in to the second tier, then they’ll need to improve their results on the road. They’ve managed just four points from their six away matches so far, which is a dismal return. That’s the fourth worst in Serie A, and there aren’t too many in the Italian top flight who have a strong record away from home this term.

Their poor away defending plays a key part in that, they’ve let in two goals per game away on average so far. They’ve conceded in 83% of their matches on the road, while they’ve been leaking goals in the Europa League too. They’ve let in a goal in 75% of their group stage matches. Their last three league games have seen them concede at least twice in each, while they’ve lost all three.

That’s more understandable when you take into account that the visitors are missing some key players from last term. They’d be greatly improved if Domenico Berardi or Simone Missiroli were available. Those two remain out, so it’s hard to see their fortunes improving any time soon, especially ahead of a trip to a strong Sampdoria side.

The hosts are two places and two points above Sassuolo. They’re staying out of danger thanks to their form at the Luigi Ferraris, with 67% of their points this term coming at home. They’ve conceded just 24% of their goals this season at their own ground. They’ve now won back to back matches here, while they’ve found scoring form of late. Sampdoria have found the net in seven straight games.

Their wins here over rivals Genoa and Inter Milan should be a big boost to their confidence. Meanwhile, the visitors are coming here with an awful away record. They’ve lost 67% of their away games, while 69% of their points were picked up at home. Seeing as Sassuolo have lost their last three games, we’re backing another home win for an improving Sampdoria side.
