Goals still a theme at Sassuolo

Sassuolo may have endured a difficult few weeks, beginning the season with back-to-back defeats and looking overwhelmingly likely to lose Giacomo Raspadori to Napoli after Gianluca Scamacca joined West Ham, but the Neroverdi’s fans are still seeing a regular flow of goals, and there is little to suggest that will change against Lecce on Saturday.

Indeed, a remarkable 30 of Sassuolo’s 38 Serie A games contained over 2.5 goals last season, as have each of their last five competitive outings. The Neroverdi were a distant second best against Juventus last time out, but their 3-2 Coppa Italia defeat to Modena one week earlier will have provided more cause for concern, and Alessio Dionisi’s team have now conceded three goals in each of their last three competitive matches.

Lecce were agonisingly close to snatching a draw against Inter on their Serie A return last week, but Marco Baroni’s men will have to improve their defensive record if they are to stay up after exiting the Coppa Italia with a 3-2 home defeat against Cittadella in their previous outing. Lecce faced 20 shots and allowed Inter 70 per cent of the play last week, and if they look to play on the break against Dionisi’s frantic outfit on Saturday, entertainment should be expected.

Over 2.5 goals likely

Given the chaotic nature of most Sassuolo games and the fact that Lecce’s backline is still adapting to playing at a higher level, backing over 2.5 match goals looks the most prudent play for Saturday’s contest.

Meanwhile, Sassuolo’s superior quality should give them enough to clinch a 2-1 victory over the promoted outfit in what could be an open match.
