We use stars to rate our confidence in our tips, with 3 being most confident to 1 being the least.
Scotland 2-1 @ 8/1

Reason For Scotland vs Israel Predictions

  • Both teams scored in 70% of Israel’s last 10 games.
  • Scotland kept just two clean sheets in their last 14 matches.
  • Israel were beaten in nine of their last 11 away fixtures.
  • Scotland scored exactly two goals in three of their last five victories.

Scotland targeting fast start

Scotland open their latest Nations League campaign with a fixture against a familiar foe this week, as Steve Clarke’s men host an Israel side they shared a group with in the same competition in 2018.

With a squad heavily dusted with Premier League performers, there is optimism in the Scottish camp that they can put their disappointing European Championships qualification campaign of 2019 behind them with a strong showing in the UNL.

Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson, Arsenal’s Kieran Tierney, Southampton’s Stuart Armstrong, Sheffield United’s John Fleck, Aston Villa’s John McGinn and Man Utd’s Scott McTominay all feature in Steve Clarke’s first Scotland squad of the year, and with so many top-level stars in tow, it’s time for Scotland move clear of their frustrating inconsistencies.

Israel in a state of flux

Israel meanwhile, will arrive in Glasgow under a cloud of uncertainty after Andreas Herzog departure as manager. Herzog’s compatriot Willibald Ruttensteiner was installed as his caretaker replacement, though it will be interesting to see how the lack of permanency in the dugout will affect the team’s performance.

The Israelis finished second last in their Euros qualification section last year, winning just two of their 10 matches in a group they shared with Poland, Austria, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Latvia in what was an overwhelmingly sub-par campaign.

Outside their borders the team’s problems were considerable, and Israel were beaten in in all but one of their five tests last year. In total, the poor travellers lost nine of their last 11 international away assignments since early 2017.

Goals likely at both ends

Scotland have had huge problems in defence in recent seasons, and their inability to keep things tight in their own third has held them back across numerous international campaigns.

Remarkably, the only clean sheets the Scots secured in their last 14 attempts were in home and away fixtures against traditional whipping boys San Marino – and we expect Steve Clarke’s troops to leave Hampden Park without a shutout again on Friday.

Despite a series of poor results, Israel managed to notch in 80% of their 10 fixtures in 2019, with both teams registering in 70% of those matches overall, and Ruttensteiner’s charges should find opportunities to score in Scotland this week against the host’s unconvincing defence.

Both teams hit the net in each of Scotland and Israel’s two Nations League meetings in 2019, and the evidence suggests the same outcome is worth backing in their latest encounter at the prices quoted.

Our correct score prediction backs the Scots to eventually carve out a 2-1 win however. With defeats in 81% of their last 11 away matches, Israel’s record on the road is dismal, and we’re tipping Scotland to take advantage.

Having averaged just 1.6 goals per 90 minutes in 2019, it’s clear that Scotland lack the firepower to cut loose however, though having scored exactly twice in three of the five victories they recorded last year, another brace is within their range.
