Tip Reasoning

Group H looked like one of the closest groups of the entire World Cup to predict, and it’s turned out to be the case. Colombia and Poland were the pre-tournament favourites for qualification from the group, but the latter of these two has already been eliminated and Colombia are in need of a result here.

Japan sit top of the group, level on points with Senegal but leading due to picking up fewer cards. However, Colombia are just a point behind both of them and could still win the group, but they will need to get past this surprisingly good Senegal outfit.

Senegal started their campaign with an impressive 2-1 win over Poland, although they did get fairly fortunate with their goals. An own goal from Poland’s Cionek opened the scoring before a dreadful backpass from Krychowiak allowed Niang to double their lead. Krychowiak did manage a brief repentance by scoring at the other end, but the damage was done for Poland.

The Africans could have had another three points on Sunday as well. They twice took the lead over Japan thanks to Mane and Wague, but defensively they looked hugely vulnerable and deservedly saw their lead pegged back by their Asian opponents.

Colombia will be hoping to take advantage of this defensive vulnerabiliy too. Their World Cup started disastrously as they saw Carlos Sanchez sent off inside of five minutes against Japan, with Shinji Kagawa adding insult to injury when he converted the penalty. However, Colombia fought their way back into it and were actually in control of the game for large parts.

A clever free kick from Quintero brought them level, but they fell behind again to Yuyi Osaka’s goal. It was a disappointing result considering their performance, but they made up for it as they hammered Poland 3-0 on Sunday. This leaves them needing a win to guarantee qualification to the knockout rounds, and considering their performance against Poland, that’s looking quite likely.

Senegal may have been able to get at the Japan defence, but Colombia’s is much more compact and will be harder to break down. Meanwhile, at the other end, the likes of James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao will have the opportunity to truly test this shaky Senegalese back line. We fancy them to take the points, so we’re backing a Colombia Win. Considering all four of their combined games have seen at least three goals, we’re expecting another high scoring one too, so we’re also backing a Colombia Win and Over 2.5 Goals along with a 3-1 correct score predictions.

James Rodriguez is Colombia’s talisman, and he burst onto the scene four years ago by taking the Golden Boot in Brazil. He missed the first game through injury, but now that he’s getting back to full fitness we think he’s a great bet for our anytime goalscorer predictions.
