Sevilla vs Real Madrid Predictions

With Real Madrid 3-0 up from the 1st Leg, they only need to net a single goal here to leave Sevilla needing a highly improbable five. Given Real Madrid are on a record-equalling 39 game unbeaten run in Spanish competitions, it’s virtually impossible to see that happening.

As a result this game is likely to serve merely as a rehearsal for the league meeting between the sides at the same venue on Sunday. That game will be of far greater significance, given Real Madrid and Sevilla are currently the top two teams in La Liga and therefore we are likely to see both coaches rest numerous players for this Copa del Rey clash.

Trying to predict a Zinedine Zidane team-sheet isn’t always the easiest thing to do. Beating Barcelona’s 39 game unbeaten record will probably be at the back of his mind but there is still more than enough quality to come here and win the game. Players of the quality of James Rodriguez and Alvaro Morata are likely to come into the team following on from the 5-0 demolition of Granada at the weekend and the Colombian in particular will feel he has a point to prove after being left out of that match, despite an impressive brace in the 1st Leg of this tie. He has stated his intention is to stay at the club despite plenty of rumours linking him with a move away. With Ronaldo and Benzema likely to be rested, James should be occupying an advanced role and he looks like a good bet to score anytime.

As for Sevilla, they also have a squad of a good size so even if they make wholesale changes, they should still be able to field a competitive team. However, given the 1st Leg result, this match and now this competition must rank pretty low in terms of their priorities this season. They have a Champions League knock-out tie with Leicester to come and if they can get the better of Real Madrid in La Liga on Sunday, they’ll be just a point off the summit, as we approach the mid-way point in the season. Realistically they aren’t going to come back from 3-0 down against Real Madrid so it’d be illogical to exert a huge amount of energy trying with such a big game against the same opposition just 72 hours later.

Whoever they send out, Real Madrid seem to just be in the knack of winning matches right now. It’s now over 9 months since they lost a competitive football match and they’ve won 13 of their last 15 away games in domestic competitions, which is exceptional. Given that, backing Real Madrid to win at 11/10 looks to represent value here.
