Sheffield Wednesday vs Huddersfield Predictions
This is certainly one of the biggest games this weekend in the Championship. Not only is there local pride at stake but with both clubs currently in the top six, it will have an impact on the race for the play-offs. Both sides are in good form so it’s hard to see it being anything other than a close game and with the stakes so high, it could be a cagey affair.
Huddersfield have really improved defensively this season. They’ve conceded just 1.12 goals per game in the Championship this term and have managed to keep clean sheets in 31% of their away games, which is an impressive ratio. They’ll be respectful of Sheffield Wednesday and are unlikely to try anything too bold but they are chasing a 4th consecutive Championship away win here so they will travel with confidence.
2 of those 3 previous wins were by 1-0 margins but they did come against struggling sides and they’ll find breaking down Wednesday’s defence a much tougher prospect. The Terriers have only scored exactly 1 goal per game on average on their travels, which isn’t great and the Owls will feel they can cope with most of their threat as they did when they recorded a 1-0 win at Huddersfield earlier in the season.
These sides are quite similar in that their success this season has been built around their defence and nicking games by the odd goal. Wednesday have only conceded 0.96 goals per game, which gives them the joint 4th best defensive record in the Championship. However, only one other side in the top ten has scored fewer goals than them.
The onus will be on Sheffield Wednesday as the home team to be the more positive side and with a 67% win ratio at home this term, they do look the more likely victors but it’s hard to see there being more than a goal between the sides. Wednesday have conceded just 1 goal in their last 5 Championship matches while Huddersfield have only conceded 3 in their last 6 matches in all competitions.
Therefore, this looks like a game where defence will come out on top and backing Under 2 Goal Line at 2.025 could be where the smart money lies.
