Both Teams To Score

Reason for tip

Sheffield Wednesday trail 4-0 after the first leg and simply have to commit men forward and they should be expected to at least grab a goal as they have managed to score in each of their last 14 home games, but Peterborough can punish them on the break so goals at both ends appeals.

Sheffield Wednesday 3-2

Reason for tip

This could be a high-scoring game as Wednesday try to recover a four-goal deficit and they should at least be able to finish the season with a win even if Wembley is beyond them. Posh have hit 17 goals across their last six away from home and can play their part in a 3-2 thriller in South Yorkshire.

Michael Smith To Score Anytime

Reason for tip

Wednesday forward Michael Smith scored four goals in the final two games of the normal season and will be looking to make amends for a poor first leg display, so back him to grab a goal on Thursday.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Peterborough Predictions

  • Sheffield Wednesday have scored in 14 consecutive home games
  • The Owls trail 4-0 after the first leg and as such have to push forward
  • Peterborough have scored 17 goals across their last six away fixtures

Mission impossible for Owls

Sheffield Wednesday know they will almost certainly be playing League One football next season ahead of the second leg of their play-off semi-final tie with Peterborough after a 4-0 reverse in the first fixture.

The Owls will look to attack from the off and try and get the home crowd behind them at Hillsborough, but it is hard to see them overturning this deficit.

The tactics of both sides should be fairly clear as Wednesday know they will need at least one first half goal if they are to stand any chance of an improbable comeback, while Peterborough will look to keep it as tight as possible in the early stages and launch the occasional counter.

Wednesday are the favourites to win here, but the best option for our main bet looks to be both teams to score at a similar price.

Wednesday have to commit bodies forward

The hosts have no other option other than to commit men forward and boss Darren Moore will be demanding a response from his players after their heavy defeat at London Road.

There can be no question that Posh deserved to win that game, but the scoreline flattered them and Wednesday did create a few chances themselves in the first leg so they should be expected to score on Thursday.

Wednesday have scored in 14 consecutive home games and as they have to throw men forward both teams to score looks likely.

Peterborough have hit 17 goals across their last six away games and after hitting four in the first leg they will be confident they can score at Hillsborough, and they know that one goal will almost certainly be enough to put this tie beyond any doubt.

Wednesday can sign off with a win

It is hard to see Wednesday recovering from a four goal deficit but they can at least end the season with a win and a bold 3-2 win for the hosts is the correct score prediction.

Wednesday have to go all out and they may be able to grab a few goals, but Peterborough play good counter attacking football and should be expected to get on the scoresheet, potentially adding a late goal if Wednesday do hold a lead going into the final stages.

Owls forward Michael Smith was taken off just after the hour mark in the first leg after a lacklustre display and will be desperate to make amends if he does manage to keep hold of his starting spot. The 31-year-old hit four goals in the final two games of the regular season and if he is included from the off looks a good contender for an anytime goal.
