Sheffield Wednesday vs Rotherham Predictions
- Sheffield Wednesday have lost once at home in the league all season
- Rotherham have conceded five goals in 15 away league games this campaign
- Less than three goals have been scored in nine of Sheffield Wednesday’s 14 home league matches this season
Tight Yorkshire derby in store
Two Yorkshire rivals, both with solid promotion credentials, take the field at Hillsborough on Sunday. Both teams are firmly in the hunt for a return to the Championship at the first time of asking – a tight contest looks to be in the offing.
Rotherham currently top the League One table and have a nine-point cushion on 3rd place MK Dons. Wednesday are unbeaten in their last four, and are now firmly in the mix for a top six spot come the end of the season. A point would probably be viewed as a good one for both, with both wary of relinquishing ground in their quests for promotion.
Wednesday rock solid at home
Sheffield Wednesday’s success this season has been built largely on a very impressive home record – The Owls have only lost once on home soil in the league this season. Darren Moore’s men have taken 31 points from 14 home matches in the league this campaign, a points return that can only be bettered by three sides – The Owls have played less home games than those three teams. Wednesday have kept clean sheets in each of their last three home games and are unlikely to afford the visitors many chances on Sunday.
Rotherham’s stingy defence set give little away
No team has scored more and conceded fewer goals in League One than Rotherham this season – a recipe for success. As such Rotherham find themselves top of the table nine points clear of second place Wigan. Only Wolves and Manchester City have conceded fewer goals than Rotherham in English footballs top four divisions this season. There’s no reason not to expect another resolute display from The Millers back line – Sunday’s game looks set to be a low scoring instalment of this Yorkshire derby.
Not what any neutral wants to hear, but I am struggling to see this being the ding-dong, high-scoring, blood-and-thunder derby game many are hoping for. Under 2.5 goals is the main selection and ranks as a very confident pick. In the correct score market, I will chance a 1-0 home win.
