Southampton vs Arsenal Predictions
- BT Sport 1
- Arsenal have kept a clean sheet in five of their last six games
- Southampton have kept as many clean sheets at home this term as they did in the last two seasons combined
- The Saints have seen under 2.5 goals land in six straight league meetings
- These two have met twice already this season, with just three goals scored in total
Speedy return for Arsenal
After losing 1-0 at St Mary’s on Saturday, Arsenal are straight back here for a rematch with Southampton. The Gunners saw their FA Cup hopes go in that Fourth Round defeat, but can they continue some good league form?
The Gunners have sparked a recovery in the league after winning four of their last five matches, but they face a difficult test given that the Saints sit above them in 10th place in the Premier League. Will there be much between them on Tuesday?
Arsenal tightening up
Arsenal saw a run of five-straight clean sheets come to an end in their loss to Southampton. However, the Gunners have a brilliant record defensively on the road, as they head into this one having let in just eight goals in their nine league trips this term.
The main problem for Arsenal has come in attack, with the Gunners boosting their scoring tally with four goals at West Brom in their last away game. Before that they had hit only seven in their first eight on the road. That’s not a good sign ahead of an encounter with an impressive Saints defence.
Southampton have kept six home Premier League clean sheets this season. They’ve already matched their combined tally for 2018/19 and 2019/20 by January. They’re on course to at least match their tally from 2016/17 (8).
Goals in short supply at St Mary’s
However, things aren’t going as well at the other end. After a run of scoring in 12 consecutive Premier League matches, Southampton have failed to score in four of their last five in the competition. Each of their last six have seen under 2.5 goals land, with 67% of their league games overall seeing fewer than three goals.
Arsenal have seen under 2.5 land in the majority of their away trips this term. The last three meetings between these two have also seen fewer than three goals, with the pair having met twice since the start of December. Given that run, our first prediction here is under 2.5 goals.
Southampton have won one of their last 10 Premier League matches against Arsenal (D4 L5). Meanwhile, Arsenal’s list of recent wins has come during a favourable fixture run. Given that, our correct score prediction here is a repeat of the 1-1 draw they shared at the Emirates.
Southampton injuries and team news
The Saints are without seven injured players, while Oriol Romeu’s return looks unlikely in this fixture. However, the hosts did get Danny Ings back in action on Saturday.
Arsenal injuries and team news
The Gunners will give late fitness tests to Dani Ceballos and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
