Southampton vs Arsenal Predictions
- Southampton are unbeaten in 14 matches in all competitions.
- Both teams have scored in each of the last four meetings.
- Arsenal have scored more than twice in only one of their last nine visits to Southampton.
Goal-shy Gunners unlikely to cut loose
Arsenal are still in pole position to win the Premier League and they are are in the last eight of the Champions League but they lost the EFL Cup final to Manchester City with little more than a whimper last time out and they may struggle to see off red-hot Southampton in this FA Cup quarter-final clash.
The Gunners’ class should tell in the end at St Mary’s where backing an Arsenal win in which both teams score could pay off.
Despite staying top of the pile in the Premier League and maintaining progress in Europe, there have been signs recently that the Londoners are running out of steam and they have had to grind out victories amid accusations of a boring style of play.
Things have been much better for Southampton who are one of the form sides in the Championship and their progress under boss Tonda Eckert has lifted them firmly into the playoff and possibly even the promotion picture.
A 14-match unbeaten run includes a 1-0 win at Fulham in the previous round of this competition and they can at the very least get on the scoresheet in this contest, having scored in each of their last 16 outings.
Saints can limit the damage
Mansfield made life hard for Arsenal in the last round of the cup and Southampton could follow suit in their dust-up with the Gunners.
The Stags equalled Arsenal’s tally of 14 shots at Field Mill in their 2-1 defeat and backing a repeat scoreline in this tie could pay dividends.
Arsenal have scored more than twice in only one of their last nine visits to Southampton and it was 2-1 to the Premier League giants when they last visited in May last year.
Put your faith in Jesus
Gabriel Jesus has played a limited role for Arsenal this term following a long-term injury but he is likely to continue as the main man in attack for the cup competitions and he could make the most of his chance at the weekend.
Jesus has started each of Arsenal’s FA Cup fixtures this season and he was on the mark in the 4-0 win over Wigan.
The Brazilian will be keen to show he still has a part to play in the closing months of the season and he looks a solid anytime goalscorer option in this St Mary’s encounter.
