SPAL vs Torino Predictions

  • SPAL have lost each of their last six games
  • The hosts have conceded in 94% of their home games, conceding two goals per game
  • Torino haven’t kept a clean sheet in eight away trips
  • No team outside the bottom three have conceded more goals than Torino in 2020 (37 in 18 games)

SPAL play out their campaign

Having already been relegated from Serie A, SPAL face a run-in with nothing but pride on the line. However, their dreadful restart suggests they won’t claw much of that back in their final three games, starting with this weekend’s meeting with Torino.

The problem for the hosts is that they are going through one of the worst Serie A campaigns on record. SPAL are one of only four Clubs to lose at least 26 of their first 35 games of the season in Serie A, after Lecce in 1993/94, Brescia in 1994/95 and Benevento in 2017/18. Having added to that by losing their previous six games, we don’t have much faith in the hosts going into this clash.

Torino need to confirm survival

While SPAL’s season is done, Torino need another result to guarantee that they will be a Serie A side next season. The visitors haven’t been able to secure their safety since the restart, but with a six-point lead over Lecce they can wrap up another season in the top-flight with a positive result away to the league’s bottom side. They should be confident of achieving that, especially when you consider how poor SPAL have been this term.

The hosts have won only twice at home in 17 games, letting in 36 goals across that period. They’ve conceded in 94% of their matches at their own ground this season, while their recent form has seen them fall towards the drop. They’ve conceded in every game since returning to action, while their return of one point from eight matches is the worst in the league.

Defensive issues could hit Toro

While everything looks good for the visitors ahead of this trip, their own away form is a real worry. In a difficult run of away games, the visitors have lost eight on the spin. They’ve conceded at least twice in each of their four matches away from home since returning to action. Having conceded 36 times across 17 matches on the road, we don’t trust Torino’s defence in our predictions.

We are going with both teams to score as our first pick in this clash, given that neither of these two sides look capable of holding the other at bay. Only the bottom three have conceded more goals than Torino since the turn of the year, while SPAL have conceded 70 times over the course of the season. Meanwhile, with SPAL in such awful home form, we’re siding with a Torino side who have won two of three trips to the bottom four. A 2-1 victory for Il Toro is our correct score prediction for this encounter.
