Spezia vs Verona Predictions
- Spezia won just one of their final 12 matches
- Verona won three of their final 10 (D3, L4).
- Both of these teams have managed just two clean sheets in their last 13 respective games.
Cruel fate awaits Spezia or Verona
A relegation play-off is required in Serie A for the first time since 2005 as Spezia and Verona finished level on 31 points.
This game will take place at a neutral venue, Sassuolo’s Mapei Stadium, and the loser will be condemned to relegation.
Verona were minutes away from survival in the final round of games but two late goals saw them slip to a 3-1 defeat at Milan, while Spezia were unable to get anything from their game against a Roma outfit who went into the match on the back of a shoot-out defeat to Sevilla in the Europa League final.
Momentum possibly with Verona
Unsurprisingly both of these sides head into the game in poor form as Spezia managed just one win in their final 12 games, while Verona are winless in four.
Marco Zaffaroni’s men did manage three wins in six games prior to that four-game winless streak, however, and their performance at the San Siro suggests they can edge this tie against Spezia so a win for Verona is the main bet.
Both defences look suspect
A 2-1 win for Verona is the correct score prediction as Spezia have conceded at least twice in five of their last seven games. Both teams seem likely to score as well as both of these leaky defences have conceded in 11 of their last 13 respective games.
Picking out a scorer here is a tough ask as no Verona player has struck more than five times in Serie A and Spezia’s top scorer M’Bala Nzola has gone six games without a goal.
Verona midfielder Ibrahim Sulemana looks a reasonable outside bet, however, as the 20-year-old put in some solid displays across the last few rounds of fixtures and is the kind of player who could make a difference on Sunday.
