Sporting Lisbon to Win and Under 3.5 Match Goals

Reason for tip

Sporting lead the way in the Primeira Liga and should continue their dominance against newly-promoted Estrela on Sunday in a game of few goals.

The hosts have won all their home league matches this term but only one has seen over 3.5 goals, so taking the under alongside a Sporting win looks the best play.

Sporting Lisbon 2-0

Reason for tip

Estrela held their own at home against Porto and in their away fixture at Benfica, losing 1-0 and 2-0 respectively, and they can limit the attack of another of Portugal’s big three on Sunday.

Sporting have kept clean sheets in three of their last four league matches at the José Alvalade Stadium and should stop their visitors from scoring, even if not netting many goals themselves.

Sporting Lisbon vs Estrela Amadora Predictions

  • Sporting are unbeaten in their nine league matches this term, winning eight
  • Estrela have lost both of their previous meetings with their hosts
  • Only one of Sporting’s five home matches have gone over 3.5 goals

League-leaders can continue form in Lisbon

Newly-promoted Estrela have coped well in Portugal’s top flight so far, sitting ninth and having won their last match against a solid Famalicao side, but they may come unstuck when they travel to league-leaders Sporting Lisbon.

The hosts are unbeaten in the league after nine games, having won eight of those fixtures, and should be confident of maintaining their perfect Primeira Liga home record on Sunday.

The visitors did win their last away match, but that came against a mid-table Casa Pia who are a far weaker outfit than Ruben Amorim’s dominant Sporting side.

Estrela have lost all three of their matches against the other members of the traditional Portuguese big four (Porto, Benfica and Braga) this season, at an aggregate score of 7-2, suggesting the hosts should take all three points.

Estrela can stand firm in defeat

But Estrela can take pride in their 2-0 away defeat at reigning champions Benfica and it is unlikely Sporting will blow them away, with a similar score line looking probable on Sunday.

Only one of the hosts’ five home games this season have gone over 3.5 goals, their 3-2 win over Vizela on the opening day, and Estrela may frustrate the Lions, as they did to Porto in a 1-0 defeat in September, and limit their attacking output to a maximum of two goals.
