Sporting Lisbon vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions
- Sporting are winless in six meetings with English sides, losing five
- Tottenham have won four of their last five matches
- The hosts have lost to nil in two of their last five games
Battle for top spot
After winning their opening games, these two sides meet in Lisbon aiming to take top spot. Sporting have never won their opening two games in a Champions League group, which should be a good omen for the visitors.
Tottenham were able to rest for almost a week after beating Marseille in their opener and they head to Portugal looking strong. Antonio Conte’s side have made huge progress in under a year, but winning on the road in Europe is a new test.
Struggle for Sporting
The hosts have won their last three games, but it hasn’t been an ideal season so far. Sporting have lost twice already this term, including a 3-0 thumping at the hands of Porto and a 2-0 home defeat to Chaves.
Sporting are winless in all six of their Champions League matches against English teams, drawing one and losing five. They’ve lost all three home games without scoring a single goal, with the latest of those coming in a 5-0 loss to Man City back in February.
Back visitors for victory
Tottenham have won four of their last five matches heading into this clash and they have yet to lose this term. While Conte’s side toiled against Marseille for stages last week, they eventually got the breakthrough and they’ll take a lot of confidence from that win.
Sporting conceded 11 home goals in the Champions League last season, so a patient Spurs side should be able to find a breakthrough. Given how the hosts have struggled against Premier League opposition, an away win looks like good value in this clash.
Sporting have lost to nil in two of their last five games, while they meet a Spurs side who haven’t scored more than two goals in any of their last six. The visitors have scored exactly twice in four of those six, so back them to claim a 2-0 victory.
