Tip Reasoning

St. Liege’s assault on the Champions League places continued last weekend when they went away from home and returned with all three points, courtesy of a 3-1 victory against Gent. That came after they notched four away against league leaders Club Brugge, so it’s probably fair to say that Ricardo Sa Pinto’s men are thriving from an offensive point of view at present. Sunday’s hosts are now unbeaten in four, three of which they’ve won.

Unlike the hosts, Genk haven’t exactly been flourishing from a goal-scoring point of view, though that doesn’t mean that they’ve done poorly. Philippe Clement’s men come here off the back of a very respectable 1-1 draw against likely champions Club Brugge, while they’re now unbeaten in five. At times, they do struggle to score goals, though they haven’t been giving much away at the other end.

It is the home side who come here in better form and they are indeed thriving from an attacking point of view, though, given that they’re not the most solid defensively, they may just be a tad short in the market. The natural conclusion drawn from this would be that the visitors are overpriced, but they too don’t make much appeal with the betting the way it is.

Considering that the hosts are likely to get forward at every opportunity, alongside the fact that they’re both thriving offensively and are struggling a tad at the other end, ‘Over 2.5 Goals & Both Teams to Score’ looks slightly overpriced.

The hosts have been a goal-scoring side of late, though it’s not only their recent productivity that has been impressive. Scoring goals is of course the main aim, and it is indeed pleasing that Liege have been finding the net with regularity, but the fact that they’re creating regular opportunities is more positive. For some time now Sa Pinto’s men have adopted an attacking approach, an approach that has often paid dividends offensively, as the fact that they’ve scored nine goals in their last three matches suggests.

However, the downside to playing attacking football is the risk of being caught out at the back, which is something that Sunday’s hosts often struggle with. Guarding against the break has been a bit of a problem for Liege, who’ve conceded in each of their last three, as well as in eight of their last ten at home, while they’re generally open at the back. They should create plenty in this match but expecting them to do so without coming under pressure defensively may be foolish.

Genk aren’t quite as attack-minded as Liege; in fact, they often struggle to break teams down, though they are more than capable of hurting teams who leave space in behind. As the visitors have scored against both Brugge and Anderlecht in recent weeks, their ability to get at the attacking teams has very much come into play. Against a Liege side who will always give their opponents a chance, the visitors can find the net for a third game in a row.

All in all, with the hosts rarely being involved in a dull game on home soil – 60% of Liege’s home matches this season have seen at least three goals go in, while both teams have scored in 73% – punters are urged to support a high-scoring game at Stade Maurice Dufrasne on Sunday evening.
