Stuttgart’s chances of reaching the Champions League knockout phase were dealt a huge blow in a 5-1 defeat at Crvena Zvezda last time out but they should be able to keep their hopes alive by beating Young Boys on Wednesday.

The Swiss visitors are one of three sides who have failed to take any points from their opening five games and a defeat in Germany will ensure their final two games are dead-rubbers.

VfB have responded well to that mauling in Serbia and are unbeaten in three games since (W2, D1), while Young Boys have been poor on the road for some time with just one win and five defeats in their last eight trips across all competitions.

A home win is expected, but the team from Bern can at least grab a consolation effort. Young Boys have scored in their last two European games and Stuttgart have just one clean sheet in 10 games at home in all competitions this season.

A 3-1 win for the hosts is the correct score prediction as VfB have scored exactly three goals in each of their last two games but haven’t managed more than three since September.

Germany U21 international Nick Woltemade may get the nod for the hosts after a two-goal showing in the win over Union Berlin last time out. The forward came on as a second half substitute in that win and proved the difference as Stuttgart fought from 2-0 down to win 3-2. Woltemade also scored and provided an assist in the DfB Pokal win cover Regensburg prior to that win over Union, and those performances may be enough to see him earn a Champions League start so if he is involved from the off back him to score.
