Sheffield Wednesday to Win

Reason for tip

Sheffield Wednesday have won their opening two games of the season and continue to impress under Danny Rohl. The Owls beat Sunderland 2-0 at the Stadium of Light last term and can capitalise on a Black Cats side that ended the last campaign in poor form on home soil.

Sheffield Wednesday 2-0

Reason for tip

Sunderland have failed to win any of their last seven competitive home games, including suffering a 2-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of last season. The Owls have won four away matches in a row, scoring exactly twice in three of those, so they can replicate last season’s result on Sunday.

Sunderland vs Sheffield Wednesday Predictions

  • Sheffield Wednesday have started the season with back-to-back wins in league and cup
  • The Owls won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light on the final day of last season
  • Sunderland failed to win any of their final seven home matches in the Championship last term

Black Cats have no luck on home soil

Sunderland opened the new Championship season with a new man in the dugout in Regis Le Bris and they began with a 2-0 win away at Cardiff, but that early-season optimism was then tempered by their midweek EFL Cup exit at the hands of Preston.

The Black Cats will now return to the Stadium of Light for their first home match of the season, but the omens are not good, as they ended last term on a seven-match winless run on their own patch, accumulating just two points during that time.

That run includes a 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on the final day of last season and the Owls will take confidence from that result and their own electric start to the new campaign.

Owls on a Rohl

Sheff Wed appeared doomed for the Championship drop last season before Danny Rohl’s arrival as manager in October, but after keeping them in the division with something to spare, they now look like a team with loftier ambitions.

The Owls opened the new campaign with a hugely impressive 4-0 home win over Plymouth last weekend and backed that up by dispatching of Hull on the road in the EFL Cup.

They have now won their last four competitive away fixtures, scoring exactly two goals in three of those, and it would be no surprise to see them replicate their 2-0 success over Sunderland from the final day of last season.
