Costa Rica can take step towards knockout stages

Suriname and Costa Rica meet in Group C of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Costa Rica overcame minnows Guadeloupe in their tournament opener and could potentially book their place in the next round with a victory, while Suriname need a result after going down 2-0 to Jamaica in their first game.

The victory over Guadeloupe was Los Ticos’ first win in six games in 2021 but they have faced some tough opponents during that run.  Costa Rica have claimed a draw with Bosnia this year, and have suffered two Nations League defeats after penalty shootouts to Mexico and Honduras.

Suriname have played five games this year with three wins and two defeats.  Those victories came against Cayman Islands, Aruba and Bermuda and when they have come up against better opposition they have struggled, losing 4-0 to Canada in a World Cup qualifier prior to the loss to the Reggae Boys.

Costa Rica have found clean sheets hard to come by and Guadeloupe managed to create eight chances in their previous fixture, with three on target.  The Central American nation have just two shut-outs in their last 13 games and as Suriname forced 10 chances against Jamaica we feel they should be good enough to grab a goal, even if a result is beyond them.
