Tip Reasoning

  • Tondela are unbeaten in two games under new boss Nuno Campos, a 2-2 draw and a 3-1 win.
  • Sporting Lisbon have won four of their last five games, only failing to beat Manchester City.
  • Sporting Lisbon have failed to keep a clean sheet in five of their last seven away league games, four of which were won.

Tondela trip looks tougher after coaching change

Sporting haven’t given up hope of closing the gap to leaders Porto and should claim another three points away to Tondela this weekend. But Saturday’s game looks much harder now than it would have done a few weeks ago when the hosts were limping along under Pako Ayestaran.

The ex-Liverpool assistant boss was sacked and replaced by Nuno Campos, who has breathed fresh life into the Auriverdes. A 2-2 home draw with fellow strugglers Arouca was followed by a 3-1 win at mid-table Maritimo in his second game in charge.

It would still be a big step to go toe-to-toe with the reigning champions and come out without a few scratches, but confidence in the home camp is high ahead of this and they have nothing to lose. Os Leoes have hit form with four wins from their last five in all competitions, but they still aren’t as tight defensively as they were in the first few months of the campaign.

Auriverdes have bagged against other two ‘big three’ clubs

Tondela, who have scored in five of their last six home league games, can notch in this – just like they did at home to both Benfica and Porto this season. Sporting should still prevail, however, because Ruben Amorim’s side retain that tough streak that took them to the title last year even if they don’t quite possess the same amount of quality as a year ago.

Sporting have struck at least two goals in ten of their last 11 league road games and should run out 2-1 winners on Saturday.
