Tranmere vs Manchester United Predictions
- Tranmere have conceded in 19 of their 21 competitive home games this season, but have only failed to score four times.
- Manchester United have conceded in nine of their last 11 away games in all competitions.
- Manchester United have won their last 11 FA Cup meetings with lower league opposition.
- Tranmere have conceded two goals per game on average over their last five competitive home games.
Tranmere set for another David vs Goliath clash
It was a night to remember at Prenton Park on Thursday as a 104th minute Paul Mullin goal sent Tranmere through to the FA Cup 4th Round at the expense of Watford, and the Superwhites will be full of confidence as they head into what looks like an even bigger challenge on Sunday.
As impressive as their FA Cup triumph was in midweek, Tranmere aren’t exactly in sensational form at the moment. That extra time win ended a seven match winless streak for the hosts, and they actually find themselves in the League One relegation zone after a dismal festive period.
Man Utd look to avoid further embarrassment
That being said, Manchester United aren’t exactly enjoying the best of times right now. Their FA Cup 3rd Round tie with Wolves was also taken to a replay, resulting in a low key 1-0 win at Old Trafford to get them to this stage.
However, their form as a whole is extremely concerning for the Old Trafford faithful. A shock 2-0 loss at home to Burnley on Wednesday piled yet more pressure onto Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shoulders, and it leaves them six points adrift of the top four.
Poor defensive records harm both teams’ chances
There are problems all over the pitch for Solskjaer to try and deal with, but even with their poor goalscoring record they should be able to punish the Tranmere defence. They have scored in seven of their last 12 away games in all competitions, all of which were against much stronger defensive units than they will face on Sunday.
Indeed, the Superwhites have conceded in all but two of their 21 competitive home games this season and have shipped nine goals in their last four matches at Prenton Park.
That being said, they have also scored in each of their last nine home games and have only failed to find the net on four occasions at home this season. Manchester United may boast an extraordinarily expensive defensive line, but after conceding in nine of their last 11 away games Tranmere will fancy their chances of getting on the scoresheet on Sunday. For this reason, we like the look of Both Teams to Score.
In the end, we’re expecting Manchester United to see off the lower league club. Tranmere have lost three of their last four home games and they’re facing a visiting side that haven’t lost to lower league opposition in the FA Cup since January 2010. They have won their last 11 FA Cup games against teams outside the Premier League, and with Tranmere conceding 1.67 goals per home game over their last 12 outings we like the look of a 2-1 correct score prediction.
