Werder Bremen 2-1 @ 10/1

Reason For Union Berlin vs Werder Bremen Predictions

Union Berlin’s emotional Bundesliga debut at the Stadion an der Alten Försterei in mid-August ultimately ended in disappointment as they were humbled 4-0 by league leaders RB Leipzig. It’s been an emotional ride since then. Travelling fans saw them earn their first-ever Bundesliga point in their second game away to Augsburg before they did the unthinkable and dispatched title hopefuls Borussia Dortmund 3-1 at home!

Magdeburg loanee Marius Bulter, who is debuting in the Bundesliga for the first time in the 19/20 season, scored twice in that game and Swedish striker Sebastian Andersson followed up his (and Union Berlin’s) first-ever top-flight goal with another so they’ll both be on cloud nine. Union have made a statement to the rest of the division and only time will tell if they are here to stay.

Werder Bremen also secured their first win of the 19/20 campaign last time out, winning 3-2 at home to Augsburg. Despite poor results, Florian Kohfeldt’s men have been playing good football, with their defeats against Fortuna Dusseldorf and Hoffenheim being somewhat “underserved” when taking into account the expected goals (xG) totals of 2.01 vs 1.02 and 1.05 vs 0.84 for those games respectively.

Coach Kohfeldt had even more bad luck before the international break, as forward Milot Rashica, who has scored four goals over his last five appearances for club and country, was ruled out for the foreseeable future with an injury. However, there is some good news in the return of forward Johannes Eggestein from suspension. Bremen are not expected to make any changes.

Goals are something that we have come to expect from Werder Bremen games – both teams have scored in 16 of their 20 Bundesliga matches so far in 2019 after all – and this clash between Union and Werder doesn’t look to be set up much different. Union Berlin are the only side of the two to have failed to score in any game so far this season, that being in their opener against league leaders RB Leipzig, and neither has kept a clean sheet.

Notably, no team has seen more goals in their Bundesliga games so far than Werder Bremen either (14 – joint with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz), while there have been three goals or more in two of Union’s three so far too (67%). As such, we feel that a bet on ‘over 2.5 goals and both teams to score’ is the best option for this game.

In terms of a result, as we mentioned before, Bremen haven’t had the run of the green, but their 56 shots on goal so far is a league-high – 6 more than leaders Dortmund have managed. Bremen are, therefore, expected to have the lion’s share of the opportunities to convert against Union’s vulnerable back-line. And with Bremen scoring two goals or more in each of their last two, we’re backing them to come out on top with a 2-1 scoreline on Saturday.
