Uruguay vs Chile Predictions
- Uruguay have not scored in their four most recent fixtures.
- Chile are unbeaten in their last five games (W2 D3).
- Both teams have not scored in the last two Copa America meetings between the sides.
Defences to dominate Group A matchup
Chile can seal their place in the Copa America quarter-finals on Monday night when they take on Uruguay in Cuiabá.
La Roja have collected four points from their first two tournament appearances – a somewhat fortunate draw with Argentina and a narrow but deserved win over Bolivia.
Again, Chile were a bit lucky to be facing a Bolivia side without five players who tested positive for Covid-19, including top goalscorer Marcelo Martins.
But they got the result thanks to a first-ever international goal from new recruit Ben Brereton.
The Blackburn Rovers striker also forced Bolivian goalkeeper Carlos Lampe into two good saves in the first half and proved a handful for the opposition defence until he was substituted seven minutes from time.
That could be a clue to his inclusion in a much tougher-looking contest against Uruguay – who will be smarting from their 1-0 defeat to continental neighbours Argentina.
La Celeste were not happy at all after being denied a penalty – or even a VAR review of it – and some players were clearly angry at the way they conceded a back-post header following a bit of Lionel Messi magic.
They have made slow starts to tournaments before and recovered, but the balance of the team looks all wrong at the moment with Luis Suarez isolated and Edinson Cavani often dropping far too deep.
The 1-0 defeat in the early hours of Saturday morning marked their fourth match in a row without scoring and they never looked like threatening the Argentina goal.
On that basis – and the fact that they still have a settled defence that includes former world class operators Diego Godin and Jose Maria Gimenez – the selection is Both Teams to Score – No.
That has landed in the two most recent Copa America clashes between these nations and because our correct score prediction of 0-0 hasn’t been seen in the last ten overall meetings, a scoreless meeting is long overdue.
