Paraguay to target a point in Rio

Paraguay need a point from this Tuesday’s clash against Uruguay to seal second place in Group A and Eduardo Berizzo’s men look capable of getting a result in Rio.

The bookmakers predicted a fourth place finish in the group for Paraguay, but Los Guaranies will exceed those expectations regardless of this week’s result following victories over Bolivia (3-1) and Chile (0-2).

Paraguay could top Group A with a win here if Argentina fail to beat Bolivia, though with the latter part of that equation unlikely, Berizzo’s side look set to target a draw from this fixture to go through to the last eight as runners-up.

The Paraguayans have lost only to Brazil and Argentina in their last dozen internationals, and six of those matches have ended all square.

With three of Uruguay’s last five games finishing level and the same applying to four of the last six meetings between these two sides (including their 0-0 World Cup Qualifying stalemate in Montevideo earlier this month), we think it’s worth supporting Paraguay in the double chance market this Tuesday at a shade of odds-on.

It’s also possible that Uruguay will settle for a point to progress in third place, as a likely quarter-final with either Colombia or Peru will generate no fears. Goals may well be at a premium if La Celeste are content to play things out, and 1-1 is our correct score prediction.
