UCL returns for Fener and Roma

Fenerbahce and Roma face off in the first batch of league phase games in the Champions League on Thursday as both sides return to Europe’s top competition after long absences.

Roma last competed in this competition in the 2018/19 campaign, while Fener’s last Champions League campaign came 10 years before that.

The hosts had to come through three qualifying rounds to make it this far and their success against Lyon in the final batch of qualifiers suggests they could be a surprise package in the main draw, but a Roma win still looks the best bet for this particular fixture.

The Italian giants have made an excellent start to the season with three wins in as many games, brushing Lecce and Fiorentina aside before picking up a win over Atalanta.

Fener lost at home to Besiktas over the weekend and had some mixed results at home in the Europa League last season. They also drew the home leg against Lyon in qualifying before winning on the road, and this in-form Roma side look capable of kicking off their European bid with a victory.

Fener are yet to draw a blank this season and should be able to keep things fairly close so a 2-1 win for the visitors seems a reasonable correct score prediction.

Donyell Malen has been exceptional since joining Roma midway through last season. The Dutchman hit 14 goals in 18 Serie A games last season and has five goals in three appearances this term, he stands out as a clear contender for an anytime effort.
