Villarreal vs Liverpool Predictions

Villarreal’s goalless draw at home to Real Sociedad on Sunday extended their winless streak to three matches, following on from a disappointing defeat to Rayo Vallecano and an expected loss at the Bernebau.

This means they are without a win since their visit to Prague in the Europa League quarter finals. However, they certainly showed their worth in Europe in that clash as they beat Sparta Prague 4-2 away from home, taking their aggregate victory to 6-3.

They will need a pick up a couple more La Liga results if they want to maintain their standing in the table. The 20 point gap between them and 3rd placed Real Madrid is obviously out of the question, but with just four points between them and 5th placed Celta Vigo they can’t afford to remain winless for the remainder of the season.

Liverpool’s Europa League quarter final was a little closer than Villarreal’s. They clashed with Jurgen Klopp’s former club Borussia Dortmund, and after a respectable 1-1 draw in Dortmund all hell broke loose at Anfield.

Dortmund started off at a breakneck speed as they scored two goals within the first ten minutes to leave Liverpool needing three goals to qualify for the semi finals. It looked an impossible task against the emphatic Germans, but Divock Origi gave them hope shortly after half-time before Marco Reus snatched it away again ten minutes later.  They entered the final 25 minutes needing three goals without return, and even a famous European night at Anfield couldn’t boost morale much in the stands. Phillipe Coutinho notched to make it 3-2, with Mamadhou Sakho drawing level ten minutes later. Fellow centre back Dejan Lovren got a famous goal in injury time to send Liverpool through.

This ridiculous comeback was the start of a good run of form for Liverpool, but their four match winning streak ended on Saturday as Newcastle earned a 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Liverpool are in excellent scoring form at the moment. They have notched 15 goals in their last five outings in all competitions, whilst Villarreal have managed two goals in four of their last five home matches.

I’m expecting both sides to find the net at least once on Thursday. Liverpool haven’t failed to score since a tie with Augsburg back in February, while Villarreal have found the net in eight of their last ten home matches. This makes odds of 1/1 for Both Teams to Score look good value, and I’m also going to back a 2-1 Villarreal win at 9/1.
