Vizela vs Braga Predictions

  • Sporting Braga have won four of their last six away Primeira Liga matches.
  • 11 of Vizela’s last 13 home league games have featured fewer than three goals.
  • Each of Braga’s last two games between European fixtures featured just one goal.

Carmo’s calming influence on Braga backline

Sporting Braga’s main focus is on Europa right now, but they should just have enough to edge a low-scoring contest at nearby Vizela on Sunday night. Carlos Carvalhal’s men earned a useful 1-0 first-leg lead at to take to Ibrox for their Europa League quarter-final against Rangers on Thursday with another polished display at the back.

David Carmo’s return from an ankle fracture has transformed Braga’s defence from a haphazard assembly to a confident group with a solid presence at its centre. The centre-back was a key presence in the Arsenalistas’ win at Portimonense and the victory over Benfica that preceded the Rangers game.

The visitors lost on their last visit to Vizela in the Portuguese cup, but beat the same opponents 4-1 in Braga earlier this season. We would expect this clash to feature much less excitement as Braga will be trying to save something for their Glasgow trip and Vizela rarely see their games feature many goals. Eleven of the hosts’ last 13 home league games have featured fewer than three goals.

Few goals the norm for Vizela home games

That stat has us leaning towards under 2.5 goals as a better play than backing Braga for the win here. Carvalhal’s men may have won an impressive four of their last six road games, but Alvaro Pacheco’s men have only lost one of their last four at Estádio Do Vizela while also defeating sixth-placed Vitoria Guimaraes in a rare 3-2 thriller at the end of January.

Vizela are going to be short on midfield options as Alex Méndez and Claudemir serve suspensions while Marcos Paulo is injured, giving Braga just enough of an edge to win. That – and the fact that each of Braga’s last two games between European fixtures have featured just one goal – is enough to persuade us a 1-0 away win is the most likely result.
