Reason For Watford vs Tottenham Hotspur Predictions

  • Watford are unbeaten in six games ahead of their latest test against Spurs.
  • Tottenham won only one of their last five Premier League matches.
  • Watford have scored two or more goals in five of their last six fixtures.
  • Spurs have won only three of their last 14 away games overall since mid-August.

Contrasting recent fortunes

Ahead of their lunchtime tussle on Saturday, Watford and Tottenham Hotspur have been heading in notably different directions. Reinvigorated and re-motivated by new boss Nigel Pearson, the Hornets have pulled clear of the relegation zone in recent weeks, while Spurs’ Premier League performances have regressed and sent them hurtling south towards midtable.

Watford carry an unbeaten six-match stretch with them into Saturday’s contest and their convincing 3-0 win at relegation-candidates Bournemouth last weekend shone a light on just how much they have improved in a short space of time under Pearson.

Key Hornets’ players, including Troy Deeney, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Gerard Deulofeu, have all markedly improved under Pearson’s watch; at present, Watford look a match for anyone.

The Mourinho effect

By contrast, Tottenham have started to stutter badly under Jose Mourinho; though their 2-1 midweek cup replay win over Middlesbrough would have lifted spirits a little, Spurs’ recent Premier League record still reads just one win in five.

Shorn of the clinical finishing of Harry Kane, and hamstrung by the reductive playing style and game-plan employed by Mourinho, Tottenham look low on creativity and confidence, as evidenced by their return of just three goals in five top-flight outings.

Defensively, Tottenham’s performances continue to look dicey; incredibly, Spurs have kept just one clean sheet in 14 competitive fixtures since Mourinho’s appointment, shipping two or more goals in 50% of those matches overall.

Positive Watford result likely

With their confidence peaking, Watford will be rubbing their hands at the prospect of facing a fragile-looking Tottenham this weekend; the Hornets’ impressive wins over Man Utd and Wolves at Vicarage Road under Pearson showcased their ability to turn it on against the division’s leading lights. With Spurs’ performances and self-belief on the wane, we think a Watford team armed with plenty of momentum can take another big-name scalp this weekend.

With that considered, we think the Hornets are priced generously in the double chance market for Saturday’s game. In addition, correct score aficionados are pointed in the direction of a 2-1 Watford win. The Hornets have rediscovered their goalscoring sting under Pearson, hitting the net twice or more in five of their last six fixtures, though they face a Tottenham outfit that have registered at least once in 11 of their 14 matches under Mourinho’s direction.

So, while we expect the Hornets to secure a positive result this weekend, the numbers suggest Tottenham still carry just about enough threat in the final third to hit a consolation.
