West Brom vs Southampton Predictions
West Brom managed to get their first win of the season before the international break when they capitalised on a nine man Stoke City to win 1-0 thanks to new signing Salomon Rondon’s first goal.
This was their first win of the season, but considering two of their opening three games were against Manchester City and Chelsea, you can’t give them too much of a hard time.
They put up a good fight against Chelsea, and if it weren’t for an early missed penalty the result could have been different from the 3-2 loss that they incurred.
Their goalless draw against Watford in their second game of the season wasn’t such a good performance, but a point is a point and all of them will be valuable to West Brom this season.
Southampton got their season off to a much worse start than most expected. After losing a lot of their best players in the 2014 summer transfer window but still performing to a high level, not many people thought the continued loss of their players would lead to such a decrease in performance.
But their team was built on defence last season, and losing Toby Alderweireld, Nathaniel Clyne, and Morgan Scheiderlin has hit them hard. Add to that defensive injuries to Florin Gardos and Fraser Forster and you have a much weaker back line.
This led to them failing to win any of their opening three Premier League games, as well as being knocked out of the Europa League playoffs. They managed to grab a 3-0 win against Norwich in their last match though, taking their points tally to five after four games.
It’s not just old defensive favourites that they have lost to injury and transfers, Jordy Clasie is yet to play for his new club, and Victor Wanyama has been added to the injury list.
West Brom are also missing their first choice goalkeeper in Ben Foster, with Chris Brunt also unavailable due to injury.
Meetings between these sides have been very close in recent years, with no more than one goal separating the teams in any of their last four fixtures. I think this will be another close match, and odds of 11/5 for a draw look very favourable.
