Tip Reasoning

Whitecaps started last season with high expectations of a good season, but things didn’t go quite to plan as they started the season poorly and never really picked up the pace after that. They eventually finished 8th in the MLS Western Conference, seven points adrift of the playoffs and with major reconstructive work to do.

They have made some progress towards this in the signing of Fredy Montero. The highly rated forward is the first huge name to come into the side since Camilo left in 2013, and since then they haven’t looked the same. They will also be hoping young Kekuta Manneh can have a less injury hit season and start to live up to his potential.

The problems aren’t just up front though. They had the second worst defensive record in the Western Conference last season, and whilst Sheanon Williams will help that, it’s not expected to be enough to plug the leak.

Philadelphia Union are a team on the rise though. Earnie Stewart has set about building a squad with great depth and equally good talent in, and the addition of midfielder Haris Medunjanin could be a game changer for them. They finished 6th in the Eastern Conference last season, but they are expected to build on that this term.

They would have ended with a much better standing last term had it not been for a rather disastrous ending. They failed to win any of their last eight regular season matches and were swiftly eliminated from the MLS Cup by Toronto FC. Eight years since their introduction into the MLS and they still haven’t won a playoff game, but this season could well be the year that record ends.

Philadelphia Union may have a top class goalkeeper in Andre Blake, but their defence is riddled with holes. They conceded 20 goals in their final nine away games in the MLS last season, and they’re facing a striker eager to prove himself at his new club. Fredy Montero scored 47 MLS goals over four seasons with Seattle Sounders and has only improved since, so I think odds of 11/10 for him to score anytime against the fragile Union defence is a good bet here. I’m also backing a 2-1 win for the hosts at 15/2 for my correct score predictions.
