Wigan vs Fulham Predictions

  • Wigan are unbeaten in seven home league games, winning each of their last four to nil
  • Fulham have won only four of their last 13 away league games
  • Wigan have kept clean sheets in ten of their last 12 Championship matches

Wigan can enhance their survival claims

Wigan are still not sure of their place in the Championship next season despite losing only two of their last 17 league matches but a surprise victory at home to promotion-chasing Fulham can give them every hope of avoiding the drop.

A 12-point deduction is looming large on Wigan, who would drop from 13th into the relegation places if hit with the sanction.

The Latics were held to a 2-2 draw on Saturday at home to Charlton, conceding a 92nd-minute goal to drop a precious two points in their pursuit of survival.

However, prior to that Wigan humiliated Hull 8-0 and they have been exceptional at the DW Stadium this season, picking up 36 of their 58-point total there.

Wigan are unbeaten in seven home league games, winning each of their last four to nil against Blackburn, Stoke, QPR and Hull.

With wins over West Brom, Leeds and Nottingham Forest on their CV this season, Wigan have no problem tackling the league’s elite and they look overpriced against highflying visitors Fulham.

Fulham face tough task

Just like Wigan, Fulham are in excellent form as the season comes to a close but they can expect a stern test of their promotion credentials at the DW Stadium.

The Cottagers have won five of their last six games, with the only exception coming in a goalless draw at West Brom, to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

Fulham are two points behind second-placed West Brom and just one behind Brentford in third, so victory at Wigan with results going their way would seal automatic promotion to the Premier League.

That said, Fulham conceded three times in victory over Sheffield Wednesday last time out and they have won only four of their last 13 away league games.

The presence of Aleksandar Mitrovic, Anthony Knockaert, Bobby Reid and Josh Onamah gives Fulham the edge in attack but they have failed to win on trips to Barnsley, Middlesbrough, Charlton and Luton this season and may struggle to stamp their authority at Wigan.

Low-scoring home win makes appeal

Wigan have kept clean sheets in ten of their last 12 Championship matches and we predict that defensive resoluteness will put them in good shape against Fulham.

In fact, the Latics have kept six consecutive league clean sheets on home soil and they have conceded only 22 goals in as many games at the DW Stadium.

With clean sheets in four of Fulham’s last five league games, this promises to be a low-scoring encounter between two well-organised teams. Our prediction is Wigan to win 1-0, just as they did in recent home games with Milwall and QPR.
