Wigan vs Gillingham Predictions

  • Wigan have won seven of their last nine League One matches, scoring at least two goals on eight occasions.
  • Gillingham have conceded 12 goals in their last five League One matches (average 2.4 per game).
  • Will Keane has scored six goals in his last eight league appearances.

Latics unlikely to labour against sinking Gills

Wigan Athletic can enhance their promotion claims with a routine victory over struggling Gillingham at the DW Stadium on Saturday.

The Latics have won seven of their last nine League One matches to sit just a point off leaders Wycombe, but they have an incredible four games in hand. Leam Richardson’s side have been a punter’s dream away from home – where they have won ten of their last eleven league games, but are less reliable at home.

However, visitors Gillingham are badly out of form and appear a bit rudderless after Steve Evans was ushered towards the exit following a 4-0 home loss to Ipswich earlier this month. Steve Lovell took caretaker charge for the Gills’ 3-1 loss at home to Burton, but was unable to find an answer when the tide turned in the second half.

Hitman Keane can add to his tally

The Kent club have shipped 12 goals in their last five games and we really can’t see them stopping in-form Wigan striker Will Keane from adding to his 12-goal tally on Saturday. Keane has bagged six times in his last eight appearances, although never more than once, but he could feast on the dysfunctional Gills defence.

Although the majority of their wins this season have been by just a goal, we’re supporting a comfortable Latics victory here because of Gillingham’s woeful recent form. Wigan’s xG of 1.49 has been lower at home than away this season, so a 2-0 scoreline appeals because Richardson’s team may not need to fully extend themselves to ensure the three points.
