Wigan vs Nottingham Forest Predictions

This game sees two sides in really poor form meet so it’s a good opportunity for one at least to pick up a win to take some momentum into the league matches next weekend. Of the two it’s certainly Forest who have looked the more impressive side this season, even if they have been far too inconsistent.

Forest at least pose a genuine goal threat and have netted 1.48 goals per game this term compared to Wigan’s miserable 0.80. The return of Britt Assombalonga from his latest injury setback last weekend was a boost for them and they do have several players who know where the back of the net is, which is something you can’t say about Wigan. When he has played, Assombalonga averages a goal every 85 minutes in the Championship this term and he’s likely to get another run out here, so backing Assombalonga to score anytime at 7/4 looks to offer value. With the likes of Hildeberto Pereira in behind, there is some dynamism to their play and they should pose this Wigan side problems.

Wigan are not having a good campaign and seem unsure whether to stick or twist at times. When they’ve tried to be a bit more positive, they’ve often been exposed at the back and when they’ve shut up shop against stronger sides, they are left carrying very little goal threat of their own. The Latics have the worst goal-scoring record in the Championship and come into this game having taken just 1 point from their last 7 league games. They’ve failed to score in 5 of those games but have also let in 3 goals in a single half against a very poor Rotherham side during that period, so it is clear that they have issues in all departments.

Given that, it’s a bit of a surprise to see that Wigan are favourites to win this. Forest may not have a great away record but on individual days, they’ve put in some really good attacking displays and they look the team more capable of rising to the occasion of a one-off cup tie. Therefore, backing Nottingham Forest 0.0 Asian Handicap at 11/10 looks like it could be the way to go here.
