Wolverhampton vs Villarreal Predictions
Villareal will travel to the Molineux for one of their final pre-season friendlies before the new campaign. They have been in unbeaten form and will want to get another win over this plucky Wolves side. Wolverhampton fans should be optimistic ahead of the new season with their squad looking undoubtably strong. A win in their final friendly against a team with such pedigree would really get their support buzzing ahead of the new season.
Since Nuno Espirito Santo joined in 2017, Wolves have been such a formidable side. Their Portuguese talent Ruben Neves impressed so much last season that the club have continued this trend with a mass influx of Portuguese talent coming into the squad during the summer. The idea that Rui Patricio, Joao Moutinho and Helder Costa will make up much of the team’s spine this season is one that couldn’t have been fathomed just a few years ago. Santo has really turned this club around from being a group of dejected has-beens to a squad aiming for a mid-table finish in their first year back.
Despite a loss away to Derby last time out, Wolves have been extremely encouraging in pre-season. Wins against Basel and Young Boys plus good performances against Stoke and Ajax mean that this team is beginning to pick up its fair amount of speculation ahead of the new season. Many believe that the club could finish mid-table this season with their squad and form being so good.
And speaking of squad, the transfers they have made to bolster this already impressive group of players have been extremely exciting. The aforementioned Portuguese talents have encouraged supporters plus the additions of Diego Jota and Willy Boly mean that Wolves are on cloud nine.
However, their opponents are no slouch with Villarreal being unbeaten in pre-season so far. Granted, this has been one win in amongst four draws but to come out with positive results against the likes of Marseille, Montpellier and Angers is nothing to be scoffed at. Their victory away to Sheffield Wednesday showed what this team can do when in third gear so by the time that the competitive matches come around, the team should be firing on all cylinders.
Their signings have also been encouraging despite not being on Wolves’ level. The two attackers they have brought in, Gerard Moreno and Karl Toko Ekambi, have over 150 career goals between them despite both being under 27 years old and will hopefully link up well with their other signing Santi Cazorla. They have also added to their defence with the signing of Ramiro Funes Mori from Everton. These signings could take Villarreal to the next level and into the top four of La Liga; these new players make it an extremely exciting season ahead for their fans.
Despite Wolves’ good pre-season form thus far, we are going to be backing Villarreal to swing this one as last year’s 5th place finish is too great an achievement to dismiss. Wolves will do well in this first year since being promoted but the quality of the Submarino Amarillo will be too much for them here. However, Wolves have only failed to score once this pre-season, so they should get a goal at home against the Spaniards. Villareal are unbeaten in their last five away games and should continue that streak here with a positive result.
